National disaster observatory

This service is designed to provide national authorities with practical guidance technical support, and training in the following aspects:

  • Establishment of a National Disaster Observatory (NDO)
  • Formulation and revision of national DRR strategy and contingency plan based on the analysis of past disasters;
  • Development of the capacity for systematic collection and analysis of disaster loss data.

This service is delivered jointly by the coordination team, the Regional Technical Support Centres and the UNDP country offices.


National Disaster Observatory Establishment: An Operational Framework


Purpose
The purpose of a National Disaster Observatory is to systematically collect and analyze information on disasters and their associated losses and create an evidence base to support the formulation or revision of national disaster risk reduction strategies, action plans or programmes, and contingency plans.


Specific objectives

  • To produce a comprehensive National Disaster Profile (NDP);
  • To establish a National Disaster Observatory (NDO);
  • To develop the capacity for disaster analysis at both national and local levels;
  • To strengthen the national DRR system as a whole.
