An estimate of population for the year 2000, developed as part of GPW version 3, is used to characterize the “current” distribution of population. Although population distribution is likely to change in the future due to differential rates of population change, including urban and coastal migration and different fertility and mortality rates, at present we have little basis for projecting these changes into the future (Gaffin et al., 2004).
