Situation Update

Some of the provinces in the Mainland China have suffered from hails and floods since early May. There are 22 provinces affected nationwide, with over 13 million suffered, 132 people died or missing. 829,000 people were evacuated or required emergency assistance.

Gansu is one of the most damaged provinces. According to Gansu Red Cross’ data, as of 22 May, 523,000 people were affected by hails, floods and mudslides in Min County, Zhang County and Weiyuan County of Dingxi Prefecture. Among these, 54 died, 17 missing and 134,500 were evacuated or required emergency assistance. 66,000 houses collapsed or severely damaged. It caused an approximately RMB 8.6 billion direct economic loss.

The Red Cross Society of China Actions

Dealing with the disaster in Hunan, Jiangxi and Gansu provinces, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has allocated cash and relief materials with a total value of RMB 820,000 to support the relief operations led by the local Red Cross.

Gansu Red Cross mobilized personnel to the affected areas to conduct needs assessment and launch relief operation. Up to 22 May, RCSC allocated 1,000 quilts, 1,000 cotton jackets, 200 tents and 500 family kits to Gansu, with a total value of RMB 501,800.

The Hong Kong Red Cross Actions

Besides mobilizing 1,000 family kits to Hunan Red Cross for emergency purpose, the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) also supported Gansu Red Cross with RMB 400,000 to purchase a batch of wheat flour for distribution in severely affected areas in Dingxi Prefecture. It is expected that over 6,000 people will be benefited.

The HKRC is closely monitoring the flooding situation in order to make further relief action plan. No appeal is launched for this operation at this moment.
